Anwar Saeed is a distinguished Pakistani artist, born in 1955 in Lahore. He graduated from the National College of Arts, Lahore, and furthered his education at the Royal College of Arts in London. Known for his collages, vibrant paintings, and diverse printmaking techniques, Saeed explores themes of masculinity and same-sex desire within Muslim South Asia, often navigating the complex terrain of cultural and religious censorship. Saeed’s work frequently employs motifs such as masks and animal-human hybrids, through which he examines conflicts between religious and social expectations, gender roles, and identity formation in a culturally rich yet politically tumultuous region. These elements are not only a method of self-censorship but also serve to challenge and subtly critique societal norms. Teaching at the National College of Arts since 1986, Saeed has significantly influenced a generation of artists, embedding his deep understanding of Islamic visual culture and South Asian history into his work. His art, rich in symbolic complexity, offers a profound commentary on the dual forces of cultural heritage and contemporary societal pressures.
