Meher Afroz, born in Lucknow, India, and now based in Karachi, Pakistan, is an acclaimed painter and printmaker whose artistic journey spans several decades since the early 1970s. A graduate of the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Lucknow with honors in 1971, Afroz has cultivated a multifaceted career that includes significant roles as an art educator and a founding member of ASNA—a non-commercial organization dedicated to the exhibition and documentation of arts and crafts in Pakistan. Afroz’s work is a profound exploration of cultural, religious, and metaphysical themes, using layers of symbols drawn from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds. Her art, characterized by its meticulously crafted surfaces and deep symbolic language, often transforms into a visual chant, evoking a contemplative narrative that challenges and transcends the immediate realities. Throughout her career, Afroz has been recognized for her contributions to the arts, notably receiving the President’s Pride of Performance Award in 2015. Her international presence is substantial, with exhibitions in countries such as Nepal, Iraq, Bangladesh, India, Hong Kong, Canada, the UK, and the USA. Currently, Afroz is a senior faculty member at the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture in Karachi, where she continues to influence the new generations of artists with her profound insights into the intersections of art, culture, and philosophy.
