Tassaduq Sohail, born in 1930 in Jalandhar, India, experienced the traumatic upheaval of Partition, which profoundly influenced his artistic vision. Fleeing to Pakistan with his family, he later moved to England in the 1960s to study at St Martin’s School of Art. Sohail's journey from a turbulent childhood to the cosmopolitan art scenes of London infused his works with a rich narrative quality, characterized by vibrant, imaginative compositions that often explored themes of violence, survival, and the human condition. Throughout his career, Sohail gained recognition for his unique approach to painting and storytelling. His works often featured surreal, brightly colored creatures and scenes that radiated hope and harmony. Known for his critical eye and satirical edge, he depicted animals with a reverence that contrasted sharply with his cynical portrayals of human follies. This thematic duality became a hallmark of his work, reflecting his early life experiences and his observations of societal hypocrisies. Sohail's legacy is marked by his contributions to both art and literature, with his work exhibited internationally and held in prestigious collections. His paintings, often critical of societal norms and human behavior, invite viewers to reflect on deeper existential questions, making him a significant figure in contemporary art. Sohail passed away in 2017, leaving behind a body of work that continues to evoke dialogue and admiration for its boldness and originality.
